Plastic components inside and around a spray gun can fail faster than metal parts when they are repeatedly exposed to reducers, gun wash, lacquer thinner, aggressive cleaners, and two-component coating residues. In automotive refinishing, this degradation usually appears as swelling, cracking, softening, discoloration, poor sealing, or unstable trigger movement. The problem is not always visible at first, but it can affect atomization quality and repair consistency.
Many spray guns use plastic or polymer parts in cup assemblies, gaskets, seals, knobs, liners, filters, and internal packing areas. These materials are selected for weight reduction, cost control, chemical resistance, or flexibility. However, long-term solvent exposure can slowly extract plasticizers, weaken molecular structure, and reduce dimensional stability. Once a seal loses its original shape, air leakage or fluid seepage may occur.
In a professional body shop, the most common cause is soaking the gun or cup parts too long in strong solvent. Painters sometimes leave parts in cleaning thinner overnight to save time. This habit can damage plastic threads, cup lids, seals, and control knobs. Even when the gun looks clean, the material may have absorbed solvent and become brittle after repeated drying cycles.
A LVLP Spray Gun Factory?grade, Hand-polished body may offer smooth metal passages and refined handling, but plastic accessories and sealing parts still need chemical protection. Always check the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and solvent compatibility. Do not assume that every plastic part can tolerate the same solvent used for flushing paint lines.
After spraying, empty remaining coating immediately. Flush the fluid passage with the recommended cleaner, then remove and wipe the air cap, nozzle area, and cup components. Use a soft brush instead of sharp metal tools. If dried coating is difficult to remove, apply cleaner for a short controlled period rather than soaking parts for hours.
When using an air spray gun, pay attention to trigger feel and fan stability after cleaning. A swollen seal can make the trigger return slowly. A distorted cup gasket can allow air entry, causing intermittent fluid delivery. A damaged plastic filter can release debris into the nozzle and create a split or pulsing fan pattern.
The LVLP Spray Gun Factory?grade, Hand-polished tool should be stored dry after cleaning. Do not assemble the gun while solvent is trapped behind seals or inside the cup lid. Let components air dry in a clean area, then lightly lubricate approved moving parts with gun-safe lubricant. Avoid petroleum products if the manufacturer does not recommend them.
Inspection should be routine. Look for whitening, hairline cracks, sticky surfaces, loose threads, flattened gaskets, and uneven cup sealing. Replace suspect parts before a critical refinishing job. It is cheaper to replace a cup seal or packing set than to repaint a panel because of unstable atomization or contamination.
Plastic degradation is accelerated by chemical strength, exposure time, heat, mechanical stress, and poor storage. Professional painters reduce the risk by cleaning promptly, limiting solvent contact, using approved parts, and maintaining a replacement schedule. Good spray quality depends not only on nozzle size and pressure, but also on the health of every small sealing component in the system.
