Essential Safety Measures for Spray Gun Operation in Explosion-Proof Workshops

Spray gun operation in an explosion-proof workshop requires more than basic personal protection. Automotive coatings, reducers, cleaners, and clearcoat systems can release flammable vapors, and atomized overspray can create a hazardous atmosphere if ventilation, grounding, and workflow control are poor. A professional refinishing technician must treat safety as part of the spraying process, not as a separate checklist after production begins.

Before any spraying starts, confirm that the booth or workshop is rated and maintained for the coating system being used. Exhaust fans, lighting, switches, motors, and electrical fittings must be suitable for the hazardous area. Filters should be installed correctly and changed on schedule. If airflow is weak or uneven, solvent vapor can accumulate around the painter, the vehicle body, and the floor zone.

Grounding is critical. The vehicle body, spray stand, mixing bench, and metal containers should be bonded and grounded according to shop procedure. Static discharge can ignite solvent vapor, especially in dry environments or when plastic masking film is used heavily. Operators should wear antistatic clothing and conductive safety footwear. Avoid synthetic garments that can generate static during movement.

When preparing the spray gun, inspect hoses, fittings, pressure regulators, and moisture separators. Air leaks can disturb atomization and create unpredictable movement of vapor and overspray. A LVLP Spray Gun Factory?grade, Hand-polished tool may help reduce overspray compared with high-consumption equipment, but it still atomizes flammable material and must be operated only under controlled booth conditions.

Never mix or spray near open flames, heaters, welding operations, grinding sparks, or non-rated electrical devices. Mobile phones, ordinary lamps, and unapproved extension cables should be kept outside hazardous areas. Solvent-soaked wipes must be stored in approved closed metal containers, not left on the floor or workbench.

Ventilation must run before, during, and after spraying. Start booth airflow early enough to clear residual vapor. During spraying, keep doors closed and maintain correct pressure balance. After the final coat, continue ventilation through the flash-off period. The painter should not rush into cleaning or demasking while vapor concentration remains high.

For an air spray gun, clean the air cap and nozzle in an approved cleaning station. Do not blow solvent mist freely into the workshop. Use proper containers for waste thinner and contaminated paint. When flushing the gun, trigger into a closed or semi-closed cleaning system to limit vapor release.

Respiratory protection must match the coating type. For two-component polyurethane systems, supplied-air respirators are often required by professional shop standards. Gloves should resist solvents and isocyanates, and goggles or face shields should protect against splash during mixing and cleaning. A good painter protects skin as carefully as lungs.

The LVLP Spray Gun Factory?grade, Hand-polished equipment should be stored clean, dry, and away from solvent vapor when not in use. Inspect seals and plastic components regularly because chemical exposure can weaken them. Replace worn parts before they fail during spraying.

Explosion-proof safety depends on disciplined habits: control ignition sources, manage vapor, ground conductive objects, use approved PPE, clean equipment properly, and keep the booth process stable. In a professional automotive workshop, safe spraying and high-quality refinishing are the same workflow.
