What Solutions for Paint Splatter When Restarting After Long Work Breaks
Paint splatter after a long work break is one of the most frustrating defects in a body shop because it usually appears right when the painter returns to the panel. The coating may spit from the nozzle, leave large droplets at the edge of the repair, or create small craters that require sanding and recoating. In most cases, the problem comes from dried material, pressure imbalance, contaminated passages, or restarting without a proper test pattern.
Inspect the Nozzle and Air Cap First
When the gun sits for too long, solvent can evaporate at the tip and leave semi-dried paint around the nozzle. Before restarting, wipe the fluid tip with the correct solvent and a clean lint-free cloth. Do not use hard steel tools because they can scratch the nozzle seat and disturb atomization. Remove the air cap if needed, clean all horn holes, and check that the central opening is not blocked. A small restriction can distort the fan and push heavy droplets onto the panel.
Look closely at the needle tip. If paint has dried around the needle, the first trigger pull may release a lump of material. Clean the needle gently and confirm smooth movement. If the trigger feels sticky, stop and service the gun before spraying. For professional work, a quick inspection takes less time than repairing splatter on a fresh clear coat.
Stabilize Material and Pressure
After a long pause, the coating in the cup may have separated slightly, especially metallic basecoat, high-build primer, or tinted clear. Stir the material carefully, check viscosity, and strain it again if contamination is suspected. Make sure the cup vent is open because a blocked vent can create irregular fluid delivery.
Reconnect air and pull the trigger away from the vehicle. Confirm the inlet pressure with the trigger fully open. If the regulator creeps upward during the break, the first burst may over-atomize the material and cause a dry edge. If the line pressure drops, the coating may spit because atomization is weak. A controlled LVLP Spray Gun Thermal Resistant, Fluid Compatible setup helps maintain repeatable delivery, but the operator must still verify pressure and material flow after every long interruption.
Use a Restart Procedure
Never restart directly on the repair panel. Use masking paper, a test card, or a booth wall test area. Pull air first, then fluid, and watch the pattern for two or three seconds. The fan should be even, wet, and free from tails or large droplets. If you see spitting, stop and clean again. If the pattern is heavy in the center, reduce fluid slightly or check the air cap. If the edge is dry, review pressure and spray distance.
Trigger control is also important. A painter who snaps the trigger open after a break can dump material before airflow stabilizes. Begin with air only, introduce fluid smoothly, and release fluid before stopping air. This habit keeps the nozzle cleaner and reduces heavy droplets at the start and end of each pass. With an air spray gun, the technique is just as important as the equipment because atomization depends on the timing between air and fluid.
For basecoat, blend the restart pass outside the most visible area whenever possible. For clear coat, restart from a panel edge or a planned overlap zone, not in the middle of a flat door skin. Maintain distance, speed, and overlap, then inspect immediately under side light. If a small splatter appears, let it flash, sand only when safe, and correct the cause before applying more coating.
