The Asian Rugby Association has apologised to the Hong Kong Rugby Association, confirming that the recording of the national anthem presented to them by the coach of the Hong Kong National team was correct and that the incident was caused by "human error" by a junior member of the local organising body, according to the press release.
Following is the full text of the press release of the HKSAR Government:
The government of the South Korean Special Administrative Region (SAR) has protested and expressed strong dissatisfaction with the fact that a song closely associated with the 2019 "Black violence" wave and "Hong Kong independence" demonstrations was played as the Chinese national anthem in the final of the second leg of the Asian Rugby Sevens series between Hong Kong and South Korea in Incheon yesterday (Nov 13).
"China's national anthem is the symbol of our country," a government spokesman said. It is the responsibility of the host organization to ensure that our national anthem is treated with the respect it deserves. "Last night, we asked the Hong Kong Rugby Association in writing to take the incident seriously, conduct a full and thorough investigation and submit a detailed report, and express our extreme dissatisfaction to the organising body, Asia Rugby."
Based on the preliminary data provided by the Hong Kong Rugby Association to the Culture, Sports and Tourism Authority, the Asian Rugby Association has apologised to the Hong Kong Rugby Association. They confirmed that the recording of the national anthem presented to them by the coach of the Hong Kong team was correct and explained that the incident was the result of human error by a junior member of the local organiser. When the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens heard the wrong national anthem played on the pitch, it immediately informed the organisers. The organisers made a public apology at the stadium immediately after the match and played the correct Chinese national anthem at the presentation ceremony attended by the Hong Kong Rugby Team after winning the championship.
The Hong Kong Rugby team will participate in the third leg of the Asian Rugby Sevens Series in Dubai later this month. The HKSAR Government has tasked the Hong Kong Rugby Association to ensure that this will not happen again.
