An LVLP spray gun used every day in a collision or refinishing shop accumulates coating residue, solvent contamination and mechanical wear even when it appears clean externally. Correct storage is not simply putting the gun in a cabinet. A repeatable shutdown procedure protects the fluid passages, air cap, needle, seals and adjustment mechanisms so the gun produces the same pattern when returned to service.
Do not leave mixed 2K primer or clear coat in the cup after spraying. Catalyzed material can cure inside the fluid passage and permanently restrict flow. Empty remaining material according to shop procedures, wipe the cup and flush with the cleaning product approved for the coating system.
For a professional grade LVLP spray gun, pull the trigger during flushing so cleaner travels through the fluid nozzle. Use only enough solvent or approved cleaner to remove residue; prolonged soaking can damage seals and lubrication.
Remove the air cap and inspect every horn hole and atomization port under good lighting. Deposits in one small hole can distort the fan and cause a heavy side. Use soft brushes and manufacturer-approved cleaning tools. Never enlarge ports with drill bits, steel wire or hard picks.
Check the nozzle seat for dried coating and examine the needle tip for bending or wear. When removing the nozzle, use the correct wrench and avoid excessive torque during reassembly. A damaged needle-to-nozzle seal can cause dripping when the trigger is released.
Apply only the lubricant recommended by the gun manufacturer to trigger pivots, needle packing contact points and other specified moving parts. Keep lubricant away from the air cap, fluid nozzle and any area where it could contaminate paint.
An air spray gun should never be stored with aggressive solvent trapped inside it. After cleaning, clear the passages according to manufacturer instructions and wipe external surfaces dry.
For extended storage, follow the gun manufacturer's guidance regarding fluid and fan controls. Do not force adjustment screws against their stops. Avoid storing the gun under mechanical stress or with the trigger held open unless the manufacturer specifically instructs it.
Store the clean gun in a dry, dust-controlled cabinet away from grinding debris, sanding dust and booth contamination. Avoid high humidity that can promote corrosion. Protect the air cap and nozzle from impact; even a small deformation can change atomization.
Before the next production job, inspect the cup connection, air inlet, seals and controls. Install the gun, check for air leakage and spray cleaner or test material as appropriate. Produce a test pattern on paper and confirm symmetrical fan shape before approaching a vehicle.
High-use body shops should log nozzle and needle replacement, seal service and abnormal pattern complaints. Daily cleaning plus periodic inspection is more reliable than waiting for finish defects to reveal wear.
Proper storage preserves repeatability. A clean, dry and mechanically protected LVLP gun is far more likely to return to service with predictable fluid delivery and atomization, reducing setup time and preventing avoidable refinishing defects.
