Soft rubber parts deform easily under strong paint impact because they have low structural rigidity and high surface flexibility. Unlike metal panels or rigid plastic components, rubber trims, seals, flexible covers, and soft protective parts can move under air pressure. When the spray stream hits too hard, the part may bend, flutter, or shift on the fixture, causing uneven film thickness and poor edge coverage.
The first rule is to reduce impact energy. Lower the atomizing pressure to the minimum level that still produces acceptable atomization. Do not use panel-level pressure settings for soft parts. A wide-open fan at close distance can push the substrate before the coating even lands. For flexible materials, use a softer fan, slightly longer distance, and lighter passes.
LVLP Spray Gun Heavy-Paint-Compatible, Drop-Free Output is suitable for this type of work because it supports controlled delivery with lower air demand. When spraying soft rubber, the objective is not maximum speed; it is stable film placement. Apply a light tack coat first to create grip, then follow with medium coats after proper flash time. Heavy first coats increase solvent load and can soften the surface.
Fixture design matters. Support the rubber part from behind wherever possible. Use contour-matched holders, clips, or low-tack backing forms to prevent vibration. If the part hangs freely, the spray stream can make it swing, which changes gun distance and produces uneven texture. Always test fixture stability with clean air before loading paint.
A regular air spray gun can deform soft parts if the operator keeps the gun too close or uses excessive trigger pull. Maintain a controlled distance of about 150–200 mm, depending on the material and coating system. Move smoothly and avoid stopping at edges, because localized air pressure and wet film buildup can create waves or sagging.
Also consider solvent sensitivity. Rubber and flexible coatings can react differently depending on plasticizer content, primer type, and surface treatment. Clean with approved mild cleaners, avoid soaking, and allow full evaporation before spraying. For high-build flexible coatings, LVLP Spray Gun Heavy-Paint-Compatible, Drop-Free Output helps place material gently while reducing droplet bounce. Inspect the part after each coat; if it moves, ripples, or softens, stop and adjust pressure, distance, support, or flash time before continuing.
