In September, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish girl, Mahsa Amini, died in custody after being arrested by the religious police for wearing a hijab, sparking weeks of protests across the country.
Shortly after the incident, a 16-year-old Iranian girl was also killed by local religious police for not singing the required hymns.
Iranian fans also displayed the words "women", "life" and "freedom" on the Iranian national flag in protest at home. In support of greater freedom for women in Iran, the entire Iranian team protested by not singing the national anthem at a pre-match ceremony.
The Iranian team and its fans refused to sing Ayatollah Khamenei's so-called "national anthem" at the opening ceremony of the World Cup match between Iran and England. Iran's Portuguese coach, Carlos Queiroz, also looked serious.
The international players were silent expressions of protest with their lips closed and their faces solemn. At one point, Iranian fans in the audience booed over the stadium announcement. At tonight's World Cup, an Iranian woman watched from the stands with tears in her eyes and applauded the Iranian players for their bravery.
"The worst case scenario is that I will be expelled from the national team," said striker Azmoun, who is also known as "Iran's Messi." "I have no problem being expelled because I am willing to sacrifice all this for a hair of an Iranian woman. Long live the women of Iran."
In response, netizens said, "What a brave athlete, not afraid of power!" "These players did not forget that they were born by their mother." "Many players expressed their support when the domestic movement broke out in Iran before, such as the superstar Azmoun, who risked expulsion, and the captain Jahanbakhsh and Taremi, who wore black veil and said," The intimidating authority still cannot stop people's pursuit of love and freedom. I hope that not only Iranian women, Iranian people, anyone will have the right to love and freedom. "" At the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Iranian women were allowed into the stands for the first time. In Qatar in 2022, the Iranian team refused to sing the national anthem in support of women fighting for freedom in the country. Freedom is fought for. "" Hail to the Iranian men's football team!! "Touched, real man, hope not to lose too much!" "All of a sudden, I find that Iran is a promising country in the future. I wish Iran the best." "These players are good." "I lost the ball, but I won."
