Getting a flawless finish doesn't just come from having good paint-it's about understanding spray technique. With forge refinished painting, using an LVLP spray gun properly means nailing down fundamentals like spray distance and overlap.
Forge methods require consistency. If your gun distance or overlap is off, you'll get tiger striping, uneven gloss, or even solvent pop. Especially for car painting, visual flaws like these are unacceptable.
Basecoat: Maintain 6–7 inches
Clearcoat: Stay between 6–8 inches
Too close = runs and heavy spots
Too far = dry spray and poor adhesion
Standard overlap: 50%
Each pass should cover half of the previous one
Keep hand speed consistent: ~5–6 inches/second
Angle the spray gun perpendicular to the panel at all times
Maintain correct PSI at the cap:
12–15 PSI for basecoat
18–20 PSI for clearcoat
LVLP spray guns give you finer control at these pressures, allowing smoother gradients for blends and metallics.
Use a vertical masking paper to test your pattern. You want a long, even oval shape with feathered edges. This step ensures your forge refinished painting application won't surprise you on the panel.
Mastering overlap and distance is non-negotiable when using an LVLP spray gun. It's the difference between a repaint and a flawless finish.
