Thai Media: China's 10000 Ton Warship Delivered To Thailand, Becoming The Lar...

On April 10th, the Royal Thai Navy confirmed that Thai military representatives received the 071ET dock landing ship at Shanghai Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard. The Bangkok Post quoted the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) as saying that the new frigate, which serves as a submarine supply ship, is scheduled to arrive in Thailand on April 27th. With the signing of the delivery certificate, the 071ET ship became the largest active military ship in Southeast Asia.

According to public reports, on September 9, 2019, China and Thailand officially signed a procurement contract for the 071ET ship. This is the first time China has exported an amphibious landing ship. The Bangkok Post stated that the purchase of this ship is part of the Thai Navy's 20-year plan, which aims to put all four such large amphibious ships into service for various operations by 2036. In December 2022, the 071ET ship manufactured by Shanghai Hudong Zhonghua Shipyard completed sea trials, and the test results showed that all performance parameters met or exceeded the contract requirements, which was warmly welcomed by the Royal Thai Navy. On January 4, 2023, General Sirisawa, Deputy Commander of the Royal Thai Navy, attended the launch ceremony of the ship in Shanghai and confirmed its official name as the "HTMS Chang III".

"Xiangdao" is based on the Type 071 amphibious transport dock used by the PLA Navy, and its performance is in the leading position in the world. The Bangkok Post reported that the "Elephant Island" is 213 meters long and 28 meters wide, with a maximum speed of 25 knots and a range of 10000 nautical miles. Public data shows that the "Elephant Island" has a displacement of over 20000 tons and can carry at least 600 Marine Corps soldiers and two amphibious landing boats. It can also carry up to 5 helicopters such as the "Sea Eagle" currently in service by the Thai Navy. At the same time, the loading and delivery capabilities and deep sea maneuverability of the landing ship of the "Xiangdao" shipyard have reached international advanced levels.

Thai media also specifically compared the size of the "Elephant Island" with the current light aircraft carrier and small dock landing ship of the Thai Navy, and found that the size of the "Elephant Island" dock landing ship was even longer than the Thai Navy's "Zarik Narubei" aircraft carrier, and was about twice the size of the "Antong" class light dock landing ship built by Singapore for Thailand earlier. This shows the enormous size of the 20000 ton "Elephant Island".

Not only that, the cost-effectiveness of the 071ET ship is very prominent in comparison with military ships of the same energy category. According to Thai media reports, the price for the Thai side to purchase this ship is approximately $200 million, while the US "San Antonio" class dock transport ship, which is compared to the 071ET ship, was originally planned to cost $890 million per ship.

The Bangkok Post reported that the Royal Thai Navy also revealed that it will send another group of officials from April 12 to April 17 to discuss whether to purchase the CHD620 submarine engine made in China.
