Solving Orange Peel Issues in Forge Refinished Painting with an LVLP Spray Gun

Even seasoned auto painters occasionally run into orange peel-a common texture defect that ruins a smooth finish. The good news is that with proper technique and the right tools like an LVLP spray gun, orange peel in forge refinished painting can be eliminated or prevented entirely.

1. What Causes Orange Peel?

Low atomization (often too low or too high pressure)

Incorrect gun distance

Paint too thick or drying too quickly

Improper flash times between coats

2. Fixing It Before It Starts

Paint Prep:

Always use recommended reducer ratio (usually 1:1)

Strain paint to remove solids

Check room temperature and humidity

Spray Technique:

Maintain consistent 6–8 inch distance

Spray at 12–15 PSI for base, 18–20 PSI for clear

50% overlap with steady hand motion

3. Clearcoat Control

This is where orange peel is most visible. Using an LVLP spray gun, apply two wet coats with smooth passes. Avoid dry edges-these show texture immediately after flashing.

Optional: A final drop coat with reduced pressure can help level the finish.

4. Post-Cure Correction

If orange peel still appears:

Wet sand with 1500–2000 grit

Compound polish with foam pad

Finish with swirl remover

5. Why Forge Refinished Painting Helps

Because forge refinished painting emphasizes layering and curing technique, it naturally reduces the conditions that cause orange peel. Combined with the precise control of an LVLP spray gun, it's a reliable system for car painting results that look wet and flawless.
