Backflow occurs when paint or air moves in the wrong direction inside the spray gun fluid path. In automotive refinishing, this may show up as bubbles in the cup, pulsing spray, interrupted material flow, or contamination returning toward the paint source. If ignored, backflow can create dry spray, poor coverage, uneven metallic orientation, and clearcoat texture problems.
Start diagnosis at the cup. Check whether the cup vent is blocked. A blocked vent creates negative pressure during spraying, which can interrupt fluid feed and create unstable delivery. Remove the lid, clean the vent hole, and inspect for dried paint. Do not enlarge the vent with random tools, because an oversized vent can introduce dirt. Clean it properly with the correct brush or compressed cleaning method.
Next, inspect the fluid nozzle and needle seat. Dried coating around the nozzle can prevent proper sealing and allow pressure disturbance inside the fluid passage. Remove the nozzle according to the manufacturer's instructions, soak only compatible parts in approved cleaner, and use soft cleaning tools. Never use steel wire on precision orifices. For pressure-feed or remote-cup systems, inspect hose connections, check valves, and seals. Any loose fitting can draw air into the fluid line. Tighten fittings to specification and replace swollen seals. If the system has a check valve, confirm it closes in the reverse direction. A failed valve allows pressure fluctuation and material return. In severe cases, replace the valve rather than attempting temporary repair.
Use filtered, properly mixed material. Lumps or skin fragments can lodge in the fluid passage and create intermittent blockage. Before filling the cup, strain the coating and inspect viscosity. A single air spray gun may perform poorly if the material feed path is contaminated or partially restricted.
After repair, perform a water or solvent flow test before loading paint. Trigger the gun and observe whether flow is continuous. Then spray a test pattern with reduced material value. If pulsing disappears, return to normal settings. If bubbles remain, recheck nozzle sealing, cup venting, and packing condition.
A thorough solution is not just cleaning one part. It requires a full system approach: cup vent, nozzle, needle, packing, air cap, fittings, hoses, seals, and material filtration.
