The hood is one of the most visible panels on any vehicle, and achieving a uniform, high-gloss finish here requires a precise method. Forge refinished painting, executed with an LVLP spray gun, is an excellent technique to ensure flawless results - especially on wide, flat panels like hoods.
Large surface area = higher chance of dry spray or striping
Often exposed to sunlight and front-end debris
Metallics and pearls must lay evenly without patchiness
Sand with P600 for solid colors; P800 for metallic
Clean thoroughly with wax and grease remover
Tack cloth before every stage
Use a 1.3mm tip, 12–14 PSI at the cap
Maintain a consistent gun distance (6–7 inches)
Spray in overlapping horizontal passes
For metallics: finish with a control coat (drop coat) for uniform flake alignment
Switch to 1.4mm tip
Spray 2 medium-wet coats with 50% overlap
Let each coat flash 10–15 minutes
The LVLP spray gun atomizes softly, reducing overspray and helping basecoats and clears lay down flat - especially important when performing forge refinished painting on large panels.
Once cured, polish with a foam pad and medium compound to bring out maximum gloss. A refined finish here boosts the overall visual impact of the vehicle.
