How to Properly Set Up an LVLP Spray Gun for Gravity Refinished Painting

Even the best LVLP spray gun won't deliver a professional finish if it's not set up correctly. Here's how to get the most out of your setup when performing gravity refinished painting for car painting jobs.

1. Equipment You'll Need

LVLP spray gun (preferably with a 1.3mm or 1.4mm tip)

Air compressor (min. 3 CFM @ 40 PSI)

Air pressure regulator

Gravity feed cup

Proper PPE (respirator, gloves, goggles)

2. Step-by-Step Setup

Step 1: Attach Air Regulator

Install a gauge at the gun handle to control PSI directly at the gun. This ensures consistent spray patterns.

Step 2: Adjust Pressure

For basecoats, 10–15 PSI at the cap; for clearcoats, around 20 PSI. Check your spray gun manual for specifics.

Step 3: Fluid & Fan Adjustment

Open fluid needle about 1.5 turns to start.

Set fan width halfway.
Test spray on a masking paper to fine-tune.

Step 4: Fill the Gravity Cup

Use a paint strainer to prevent clogs. Fill only 2/3 of the cup to maintain proper balance.

Step 5: Test Spray Pattern

Hold gun 6–8 inches from surface and spray a short burst. You're aiming for a cigar-shaped pattern with even edges.

3. Common Mistakes

Using too high pressure (causes overspray)

Incorrect tip size (affects atomization)

Holding gun too close (leads to runs)

4. Conclusion

A well-calibrated LVLP spray gun used with a gravity feed system offers unmatched control and finish quality in gravity refinished painting. The setup takes minutes, but the difference it makes is enormous.
