Water-based paint is cleaner in many ways, but it is not harmless to spray gun performance. If residue dries inside the fluid passage, air cap, nozzle, or needle packing area, the spray pattern can become unstable very quickly. Poor maintenance after water-based paint often leads to spitting, fan imbalance, weak atomization, corrosion risk, and color contamination on the next job. A professional painter should treat cleaning as part of the refinishing process, not as an afterthought.
Start immediately after spraying. Do not leave water-based paint sitting in the cup while preparing another panel. Empty the cup and wipe out remaining coating. Add the recommended water-based gun cleaner, shake gently, and spray cleaner through the gun into an approved cleaning container. Pull the trigger fully so the cleaner passes through the fluid tip and needle area. Repeat until the fluid runs clean.
Next, remove the cup, air cap, fluid nozzle, and needle according to the manufacturer's procedure. Clean each part separately. Do not put oil into the air cap, fluid nozzle, or coating passage. Oil contamination can cause fisheyes and adhesion defects. A clean air spray gun should move smoothly without introducing any foreign material into the paint path.
Reassemble the gun and perform a quick function check. The trigger should return smoothly, the needle should seat correctly, and the fan control should move without sticking. Spray a small amount of clean test liquid or approved cleaner to confirm stable flow. Store the gun dry, covered, and away from sanding dust. Do not leave it soaking overnight unless the manufacturer allows it, because seals and packings may swell or degrade.
For daily shop control, keep separate guns for water-based basecoat and solvent-based clearcoat when possible. Label them clearly.
