High-solids (HS) clears contain more resin and fewer solvents, resulting in a thicker coat per pass. They're more resistant to UV, scratches, and chemical damage - ideal for car painting on luxury or performance vehicles.
The LVLP spray gun excels with HS clear thanks to:
Softer atomization, which prevents orange peel
Efficient material transfer (up to 70%)
Reduced overspray, especially critical with thicker clears
Recommended setup:
1.4mm fluid tip
18–20 PSI at the cap
6–8 inches spray distance
Let basecoat fully flash (20–30 mins) before clear
Tack surface to remove any dust or fibers
Apply 2 medium-wet coats with 10–15 mins flash
Overlap each pass by 50%
Watch panel reflections to gauge film build
Optional: A drop coat or control pass for flake orientation or additional gloss
Allow full cure per manufacturer's recommendation (usually 8–12 hrs)
Wet sand with 2000 grit if needed
Polish with medium compound and finish with swirl remover
