Corners and edges are high-risk areas in automotive painting because they receive paint from more than one spray direction. A flat panel may tolerate a normal wet pass, but a body line, bumper corner, mirror housing, wheel arch, or bracket edge can easily collect too much material. Heavy buildup leads to runs, solvent popping, dieback, or edge mapping after curing.
Start by reducing fluid output slightly before spraying complex shapes. Open the fan enough to maintain coverage, but avoid a wide pattern that wraps around the part and doubles material on the edge. If using a LVLP Spray Gun, confirm that atomization remains fine after reducing fluid. A LVLP Spray Gun is useful for controlled transfer, but the painter must still manage overlap and trigger timing.
Spray edges first with a light control coat. Do not try to achieve full hiding or gloss on the first pass. For bumpers or three-dimensional parts, coat recessed areas and return edges before spraying broad faces. This prevents dry spray inside corners while avoiding excessive film on outer edges.
Gun angle is critical. Keep the gun perpendicular to the surface being coated. When turning around a corner, move your body and wrist together instead of bending only the wrist. Wrist-only movement changes distance and increases paint density at the corner. A stable air spray gun motion keeps film build even.
Use trigger control. Release the trigger slightly before the end of each stroke and restart after moving past the edge. This prevents double-loading where strokes overlap. Maintain 50–70% overlap on flat areas, but reduce overlap slightly around tight corners. Allow correct flash time before the next coat so trapped solvent can escape.
Surface cleanliness still matters. If the edge is not Residue-free, heavy buildup can magnify contamination into fisheyes or craters. Clean folded seams and sand-through areas carefully. For repaired corners requiring Gap-filling, use primer surfacer, not excessive color or clear. Apply primer in thin stages, sand smooth, and confirm the edge is Residue-free before sealing.
For clearcoat, apply the first coat medium-wet and the second coat only after proper flash. Avoid chasing gloss on edges. Controlled Gap-filling and controlled film thickness are different tasks; confusing them creates defects.
