According to the Russian satellite news agency on December 27, Russian Ambassador to Canada Stepanov said recently that Germany and Japan voted against the resolution proposed by Russia condemning Nazism, and these two countries should not obtain permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council. Stepanov also said that Germany's opposition to the resolution made it doubtful whether the country repented of the crimes committed by the Nazis during World War II, while the Japanese government will still commemorate the war criminals enshrined in the Yasukuni Shrine.
Earlier, German Prime Minister Schultz expressed Germany's desire to become a permanent member of the Security Council and requested support for Germany's candidacy, saying that "Germany is ready". On September 21, President Biden of the United States addressed the general debate of the 77th United Nations General Assembly, referring to the so-called "United Nations reform" and proposing to increase the number of permanent and non permanent members of the Security Council. Biden believes that increasing the number of members of the Security Council can ensure a broader response to major global issues such as the food crisis and the climate crisis.
